In a surprise to nobody, Sony today announced that it would be making available a new 80GB version of the Playstation 3 console, and lowering the price of the 60GB version by 0. Sony states that it will sell the 80GB (which includes the racing game Motor Storm) version of the console for 9 and set the price of the 60GB version at 9. This, of course, only affects North America. In Europe, the price remains more than double than in America.

Beginning in August, the new PS3 model will be available in North America for a suggested retail price of 9/9 CND and will be sold with the popular online-enabled racing game MotorStorm. In conjunction with this news, the company also announced that effective immediately, the current 60GB PS3 model will be available in North America for 9/9 CND, or 0 below the original launch price.

This could possibly influence not only buyers of GTA4, but also Rockstar's decision to keep their downloadable content exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox 360. This news comes after Microsoft's decision to extend the warranty on all Xbox 360 consoles because of prevalent hardware failures. Will this affect GTA4's console userbase? Will more people buy the PS3? Stay tuned.

Ah, but chris82 just put in the news section cause he can. :P

On topic, reducing the price of the PS3... Hmm still expensive as shit! XD But I see what you mean chris82 with the downloadable content. Sony just couldn't be less "powerful" then anything else. BTW didn't MS do that with the 360 Elite (I mean the 80GB)?

I agree with story.

You know what's dumb? No one needs an 80GB drive on the PS3 because there aren't really any solid things you'd want to download.

There is jack shit in PS3 store and if you want to watch movies and listen to music on PS3 just set up a media server and watch/listen from your pc on your ps3.

They'd have to lower it to 400 for me to even think of ever buying it. And they still don't have any decent games.. But this price drop might save them.. for the time being.

BTW is Motorstorm only included on the 80 Gig version or for both?

80 GB version was not needed imho, I cant even fill 10 GB at the moment and I have over 300 songs on my PS3 and also a couple of demos and videos and trailers. The 60 GB version to 0 is good but will the same happen in the UK?

Any price cutting is good :D

I wonder how people that already have a PS 3 feel right now, probably with 0 in minus -_-

Wow... I thought they'd never make a 80GB version of the PS3. Will it be coming to the UK?

It's a pretty small increase actually.. IMO they should have tried to top the 360 Elite or at least be even. 100$ more just for 20 gig...

The wording of the press release makes me think it's certain that's it's only with the 80GB version.

Ahh damn this wont probably happen where I live ie eastern Europe.

The 80gb came to Korea a while ago with alot of extra features but I don't think Sony needed to release it. Anyone can simply upgrade their hard drive.

But this 80GB is also coming to Europe as well, they have already said that pricing and stuff will be announced at E3.

I'm glad they've cut the price of the PS3, but it's still expensive whatever way you look at it. I also agree that the store for PS3 is total shit, there isn't nearly enough content, although this will slowly improve over time. 60GB is good enough for the meanwhile, we don't need 80GB yet. I don't plan on having a few PS3 games on my hard drive, I'll just insert them as I did with the PS2, there's no point storing them on your PS3 IMO.

For downloaded movies maybe... But you could do that with your PC as well, but then you'll have to attach it to your HD TV for the high reso.

Wait didn't the 360 Elite have 80GB as well Jace? Or did they have more? :o I can't remember that far back :P

I agree PS3 is still pretty expensive but any (even if small) amount of price cutting is good for the customers. It'd still have to decrease even lower for me to ever buy it too.

Nope, the 360 Elite is 120GB. And I personally think that the PS3 should drop to at least 0, or if they really wanted to stick it to MS, 0.

Oh that would actually be pretty cool. Even though I'm gonna geta 360, I'd actually consider getting a PS3 if the price was that low... It's gonna be a while before that happens though

Id get the 60GB version when its a couple hundred dollars shorter or I might get a 80GB when its 0 shorter.

I own a 60 gb and I agree with some of you.. The extra gb isn't really worth it... But still yet, I love my Ps3 and would never trade it for an upgrade unless it was urgently necessary... PS store DOES suck for now, but I have high hopes for the future... Remember, Xbox has a year or so head-start and they were only "the shit" when online playability first came out because they were one of the first consoles to have online playability (so they've had a long time to work on it) ... PS3 is just starting out and who knows, maybe it will be just as good if not better than Xbox Live in the future... Like I always say though, both systems are good and both have/will have awesome games

It is 50, yeah.

But the 600$ one isn't 460 EUR here, it's just 600 EUR, so I'm expecting it to fall by 100 EUR here as well.

Well Playstation or Sony have just sent me a blu ray movie which is James Bond - Casino Royale for aboslutely free, so they must be trying to keep there existing customers happey as well.

Oh thrill, I guess. Still, the system doesn't have a game worth picking up and its still too bloody expensive. If it wasn't for the XBox360's hardware problems, I would go that route. Oh well, I will continue to watch and wait.

Bold: One word man, Wii.

The Wii had a great launch so I don't think you can say anything about head starts with this.

I'm glad there is a price drop, after i get my 360 I may go get a PS3.
